Health and Safety Manager, Life Sciences

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

Responsible for promoting and implementing health, safety and environmental programs in all Canadian based Life Sciences operations.  This role supports the corporate and Canadian Health, Safety and Environment Standards.  Acts as an internal technical resource to provide guidance and training on a variety of health, safety and environment issues.  Participates in internal audits of Life Sciences facilities to ensure compliance to all legislative and corporate requirements.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

•    Responsible for driving success in accident prevention through implementation of company programs to promote and improve Health & Safety.
•    Provides expertise and leadership in anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of health/safety hazards and related compliance at the site
•    Works closely with operations groups to identify risks and proactively develops/implements control methodology for these risks
•    Mentors, guides and leads the Health and Safety team including direct reports and Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), ensuring they have the tools to successfully fulfill their role and responsibilities
•    Provides Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) training to employees and visitors
•    Monitors and audits field related activities to ensure HES programs are being adhered to
•    Implement and administers standardized plant HSE processes to ensure compliance to applicable government regulations as well as and corporate standards 
•    Drives attainment of organizational goals through the elimination of environmental impacts, occupational injuries/illnesses, property damage and improvement of production efficiency as well as safeguarding the health and safety of all employees
•    Analyzes injury/illness experience, identifying/tracking injury correlation, determining root causes, establishing corrective action measures; analyze environmental incidents, determine root causes, and ensures appropriate corrective actions are implemented and maintained 
•    Manages environmental compliance issues for LS Canada sites including routine environmental reports, permit applications, inventories and surveys; including data acquisition, documentation, record keeping, monitoring, review, and approval and submittal to regulatory agencies
•    Coordinates communication of HSE regulatory inspection activity with divisional leadership 
•    Participates in the development and continuous improvement of global HSE initiatives to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations and industry leading safety practices.
•    Provides and maintains accurate statistical data, reports and analysis of injury trends to operations in support of divisional accident reduction goals.
•    Participates in divisional Health & Safety Committee activities, ensuring regular meetings and inspections are taking place, follow up action is being taken, and that required membership and certification requirements are met.
•    Reviews all accident investigation reports to ensure appropriate internal and external reporting is completed and followed-up within timeframes and participate in investigations where required.
•    Oversees workers’ compensation claims management, administration and reporting requirements; assists in the resolution of claims as required.
•    Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
•    Adheres to all health and safety rules and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Post secondary degree or diploma in a health and safety related discipline


Experience and Skills:

•    Minimum eight years of hands on health and safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
•    Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks
•    Strong understanding of HSE regulatory framework
