Team Lead - PLC Programming

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Integrated Services Team Leader assists in the estimation, planning, design, testing, configuration and production support of industrial automation installations of various manufacturing processes aimed to improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity. The candidate will read and understand mechanical & electrical schematics, plan & execute integration activities, develop & conduct operational tests to verify system performance, and oversee delivery of final automation equipment and associated maintenance plans and troubleshooting methodologies.

The candidate will report to an Automation Manager and work cross functionally with a team of Automation Engineers as well as Maintenance, Electrical, Mechanical, PLC and Robotic Technicians to assemble, test, commission, and support production equipment both on company and customer sites.


- Write and debug Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) code in accordance with programmer work instructions or customer requirements.
- Commission Industrial Networks and establish stable communication between PLCS and their network components, switches, and ancillary devices.
- Check function of all switches on cylinders, actuators, and other devices to verify functionality.
- Confirm sequence and operation of machines prior to programming with mechanical technician or engineering.
- Work closely with estimating, processing, and project management to review high-level program build and/or installation feasibility, constraints, or items of extraordinary cost implication.
- Perform and oversee team members who perform corrective maintenance, non-routine repair, modification, troubleshooting, calibration, of industrial components (including but not limited to PLC/HMI code, Robotic systems, Vision systems and Electro-mechanical devices).
- Plans project Manpower requirements and staff schedules.
- Conduct internal and external project reviews
- Change order management
- Adherence to PA/ATS processes, documentation requirements, reporting, etc.
- Project performance monitoring & forecasting
- Lead with a “can do” attitude and foster the same throughout the project team
- Manage the relationship with the client and all stakeholders
- Understand risks and manage accordingly
- Perform or manage systematic quality checks of projects at all gates 
- Resource coordination to ensure highest value of properly trained and utilized team
- Managing projects in real time and at the location of execution (as required)
- Utilizes various schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and other resources.
- Maintains records of work performed; assists in providing content for machine manuals and similar documentation for the installation, maintenance, calibrating, removal and modification of electronic systems and equipment.
- Perform field service work as required for installation, modification, and service of systems.
- Advises and assists Team Leads, management, and others on operating problems involving automation systems and provides suggested remedies.
- Plan to execute work within established budgets.  Report weekly metrics on assigned projects.  Forecast cost-to-complete on a weekly basis for remaining work.  
- Manage resources to execute within established schedule.  Report weekly on workforce utilization and make recommendations when falling below established targets.  
- Report on adherence to quality standards (workmanship standards, appearance, safety, re-work, etc.) through weekly reporting.  
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and champion successful results of the initiatives.  
- Supervise activities of integration teams, applying knowledge of manufacturing process, best practices, and procedures while adhering to customer standards and project specifications.
- Coordinate activities between integration teams, manufacturing teams and project management, to ensure efficient collaboration and use of assigned manpower.
- Analyze such customer standards and project specifications to determine and document the best and most cost-effective components, installation techniques, standard work instructions (SWIs), SOPs, and training required.
- Conduct site and equipment surveys at customer facility for estimating purposes. 
- Attend required project meetings and workshops.

Responsibilities Cont.

Estimate build, install and integration costs of the project (including plans for sub-contracted labor)
- Deliver labor and material proposal details to the project estimating team for proposal development. 
- Lead or assist with the determination of type and size of system components (cable tray, guarding, bonding, hardware, pipe material, etc.)
- Develop build, installation, and testing to ensure compliance with manufacturing specifications, customer specifications, and machine design intent.
- Perform systematic quality checks of installation and build.
- Execute staff level hires and mobility decisions as authorized by management.  Reinforce the performance culture by setting expectations, mentoring, providing feedback and reviewing the performance of direct reports.
- Ensure that all personnel over whom they have responsibility comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its Regulations and the ATS Health and Safety and Environment (“HSE”) Program.  
- Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
- Demonstrate leadership in HSE compliance.
- Hold team members accountable for HSE compliance as part of the annual performance review process.
- Ensure that the requirements of the HSE management system are implemented and maintained.
- Ensure that every reasonable precaution is taken to provide for the health and safety of employees in the workplace.  To this end, carry out hazard assessments, inspections, and audits as required by legislative framework and/or corporate requirements.
- Ensure that training is provided to all departmental employees are pre-established in the training matrix.
- Implement appropriate corrective measures for unsafe conditions and unsafe acts.
- Ensure that appropriate equipment, materials, and protective devices are provided and maintained in safe condition.
- Provide information, instruction, and supervision to employees.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively including overnight stays primarily within North America.
- Ability to work extended shift durations including non-day shift and/or weekend assignments.
- Robot Programming and troubleshooting is a plus

Education, Experience, and HSE

-AS or HS Diploma with at least 10 years of automation integration experience in automotive (including significant leadership experience) required.   
-BS in an engineering related discipline preferred.  

- Ensure that equipment, materials and protective devices are functioning in a safe manner
- Ensure that employees are working in accordance with divisional health and safety procedures
- Applies progressive discipline as appropriate for health, safety and/or environmental violations
- Advise employees of the existence of any potential or actual health and safety risks
- Provide appropriate instruction for safe work
- Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of employees
- Conduct periodic inspections and audits in accordance with legislative and/or corporate requirements
- Conduct accident/incident investigations, prepare necessary reports and communicate to line management, health and safety personnel and health and safety committee
- Ensure that all employees, including temporary workers and contractors, adhere to safety requirements including the use of personal protective equipment
- Support activities and initiatives outlined by the Joint Health and Safety Committee
