Manager, Hardware Engineering
Major Duties
Administrative and technical management of the Hardware Engineering Team and projects as assigned by the Director, Engineering.
Job Description
Team Leadership & Culture:
• Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of Hardware Engineering Department using specialized knowledge of general engineering principles and knowledge in Controls Hardware Design.
• Review project schedules on a timely basis to ensure the hardware engineering portion of projects are completed on time and take corrective action, coordinating with other departments as required.
• Assess workload, assign leads to engineering projects and oversee the completion according to specific deadlines and project schedules.
• Conduct employee performance evaluations, recommend salary adjustments, and initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, discharges and disciplinary measures for staff reporting to him/her.
• Encourage and mentor direct employees to ensure that departmental morale and efficiency are maintained at the highest level. Conduct regular 1:1 with leads and direct reports
• Support employee training by analyzing needs on an annual basis using the training matrix
• Based on business goals and annual growth, establish resource requirements skills and organizational needs that will sustain adequate capacity and leadership within the department.
• Coach team members on ABM processes, A3s, RCCAs, cost benefit analysis, process development
• Lead daily team meetings
• Prioritize resources to ensure all work is achieved. Work closely with Engineering Team Leads to ensure resources are properly deployed.
• Deploy Visual Management tools for Engineering Team (i.e., Control Board)
• Develop & deploy Team KPIs (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Productivity, Cost, and Employee Engagement)
• Measure departmental KPI results and rework and develop improvement plans where required.
• Lead various Hoshin (High Level Objectives) activities as assigned through objective planning process.
• Set objectives on a yearly basis that align with business unit objectives and track progress throughout the year on those objectives.
• Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.
• Interview and select applicants on their technical qualifications and suitability for positions in the department when hiring new personnel.
• Hold departmental communications meetings on a regular basis (minimum once per quarter).
• Develop outside suppliers in anticipation of overload situations.
• Maintain a co-operative working relationship with your counterparts in other ATS business units
• Advocate and foster a team environment within both the department and throughout the business unit.
• Emphasize continuous improvement as a long-term goal and with the Director, implement procedures and programs to achieve continuous improvement in this area.
• Act as back-up coverage for Director, Engineering as required
• Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
Qualifications
Education:
- A post-secondary technology diploma or engineering degree or equivalent, specializing in electronics, electrical or controls technology.
Experience:
- Several years of experience in the design and implementation of complete control systems for industrial automation projects. This includes hands-on experience in programming and trouble-shooting with current PLC hardware, and programming software. Demonstrated experience in a management role.
- Professional Engineering designation is an asset.
