Network Engineer

Job Description


Position:  Network Engineer
Department:  Corporate Information Technology Department
Reports To:  Manager, Systems Administration


Job Summary:


The ATS Corporate IT department is responsible for the delivery of critical enterprise-wide IT systems and services.  As a member of the IT Communications team the incumbent is responsible for managing day-to-day operations of data and voice networks to ensure the ongoing availability, reliability and security of the ATS information assets in a cost-effective manner.  

The scope of the role encompasses both voice and data networks and all associated responsibilities including:

  • Networking services such as LAN, WAN, Internet infrastructure, inter-office communications and wireless,
  • Voice services such as the selection and management of carriers, establishing device standards and device selection,
  • Security services such as switches, firewalls and mobile VPN configuration and support.   



  • Provide senior level network architecture & design, management, daily administration and ownership of a large complex networking infrastructure.  Must have a strong security focus.
  • Design, manage and administer: Firewalls, BGP/OSPF routing, IDS/IDP appliances, network switches, DNS, DHCP, IP Address Management, SSL and PKI Certificates, VPN, IPSec Tunnels, Wiring closets, VOIP and VLANs and load balancers. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network related security, stability or performance issues. 
  • Implement and/or evolve the networking infrastructure, performance/monitoring tools and standard operating procedures used to manage the charitable gaming network infrastructure. 
  • Monitor, analyze and optimize network design and configuration to drive increased performance, availability and security. 
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date system and network documentation Manage ISP communication services, vendors and service contracts. 
  • Plan, evaluate, install, configure, upgrade and perform maintenance procedures on assigned servers and systems. 
  • Perform hardware installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair as necessary. 
  • Perform software installations, upgrades and patches. 
  • Provide 24x7 on-call support 
  • Monitor and act upon security advisories. 
  • Develop, review and recommend Network Security and Management Policies and SOPs. 
  • Conduct regular log monitoring, vulnerability scans, penetration testing and system health checking. 
  • Adhere to, implement, evolve and enforce structured system management disciplines and security policies. 
  • Act as a project lead or advisor to Product/Project managers in the evolution of Business Systems and Technology. 
  • Provide 3rd level technical support and mentoring to Service Desk and Technical Support teams. 
  • Review and Approve any and all changes planned to your respective systems. 
  • Keep abreast of new developments and technology and understand how this applies to our existing customers. 
  • Ensure service level compliance. 
  • Provide both informal/formal training to end-users and/or dept. technical staff.




  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related discipline, or relevant work experience in the systems administration and operations field.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) 


  • Three years of demonstrated hands-on network administration experience supporting a large scale, mission critical enterprise infrastructure, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Expert knowledge of voice and data communications, routing, switching, routed and routing protocols. 
  • Expert knowledge of security and encryption disciplines.
  • Expert knowledge of technical management processes (change control, disaster recovery planning, security administration).
  • Strong knowledge of related desktop, network, and operations disciplines.
  • Skilled in verbal, written, presentation and facilitation skills. 
  • Knowledge of IT Architectural design, definition and implementation strategies.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging IT technologies across a broad range of IT disciplines, including, hardware, software, networking, operating systems, applications development  and database management and design.
  • Knowledge of key business processes and a strong understanding of the technical requirements for those key processes. 
  • Working knowledge of project management best practices.
  • Experience with the following technologies preferred:
    • Infoblox DHCP
    • Cisco and Brocade networking
    • F5 LTM, GTM
    • Open DNS, or other DNS security
    • Wan Acceleration skills, Riverbed 
    • SIEM
    • Splunk 
    • Microsoft PKI
    • Fortinet Fortimanager, Fortigate and UTM feature
    • Cisco VOIP
