Applications Engineering

Major Duties

  • Performs a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, primarily in the support of the design and development of factory automation test systems.  Includes preparing and writing innovative detailed proposals for potential Customers, working from general automation and instrumentation ideas and concepts.
  • Works with new and returning customers in the Mobiity, Nuclear, Specialty Automation and Life Science segments, in collaboration with the ATS account/sales team, management and subject matter experts to develop custom solutions to meet our customers’ specific demands.
  • Typical activities include reviewing customer specifications and drawings, developing machine concept layout drawings including performing cycle time calculations, developing system  cost estimates, writing detailed technical proposals and presenting to both internal management and external customers.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed review of available customer information, which could include specifications, drawings, procedures, sample parts, and similar production equipment to gain a full understanding of the customer’s needs.
  • Travelling to the customer’s site to enhance understanding during the proposal development and to present the final solution to the customer.
  • Responsible to develop creative, innovative and detailed automation concepts for test equipment or systems followed by the costing and writing of detailed technical proposals for the proposed solution or project.
  • In projects where technical complexity is large, the applications engineer will involve key members of engineering management in pricing and conceptual layout.
  • Develop and summarize system labour and material costs by engaging internal management and other stakeholders, external third party vendors and suppliers to support the estimates.
  • Summarize and present ATS offerings and cost estimates to ATS management for approval.
  • Writing detailed technical proposals with a focus on ATS’s strategic advantages in the industry or application at hand, while also clearly and concisely forming the scope of work for awarded project.
  • Assists engineers and other technical staff in design and development of products, systems, processes and equipment by analyzing technical problems and working closely to Customer specifications.
  • Involves third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process, where necessary.
  • Obtains and prepares detailed estimates of time, quantities, labour and material costs required for work areas such as; product design, testing, machine building, equipment installations and manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with ATS account managers and customers to ensure all customer needs are addressed.
  • Creating technical sales presentations, in collaboration with ATS management and account managers.
  • Presentation of ATS and the proposed solutions to customers through conference calls, online or in person meetings and formal presentations.
  • Transfer information, ideas and details to the project manager and project team to begin project execution upon receipt of order and be available throughout project to support the project team.
  • Position involves extensive use of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • May be assigned special projects in support of engineering, sales & marketing.
  • Represent ATS at industry trade shows.  
  • Maintains accurate status of sales cycle and quotation status in the ATS corporate customer relation database and associated processes.
  • Support customer service in taking customer calls and quoting service and spare part proposals
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical or electrical design, engineering or equivalent.

 

Experience:

  • Three years’ experience in mechanical, manufacturing, mechatronics, electrical engineering or similar support role, preferably in an automation environment. 
  • Must have a working knowledge of instrumentation, machine controls, automation principles and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology. 
  • In addition, must be generally proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD 2D; proficiency with SolidWorks is also an asset. 
  • An ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear and concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential.
