Our Automation team in our Wixom, MI location is currently looking for a bright, ambitious Director of Applications Engineering who enjoys team work and on-going challenging projects.

Major Duties

Performs a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, primarily in support of design and development of factory automation systems.  Includes review and approval of concepts and proposals developed by Applications Engineering staff. The Director of New Innovations & Technology is also responsible for generating and developing the NA Test Systems innovation funnel.   In this role you will work with internal divisions, customers, vendors, educational institutions, etc. to discover and explore potential innovations that will drive a portfolio of new technologies and IP that differentiate ATS TEST from its competitors.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Engage technically on high profile and high-risk projects as required.
  • Engage in conflict resolution between Operations and Applications Managers as required.
  • Assist Sales with qualification of leads and customers.
  • Align Applications structure and processes to the Sales and Business Development strategy, as defined by the VP, Sales and Business Development, North America.  Define, direct and achieve required service levels between Applications and Sales.
  • Mandate the development of, and adherence to, applications processes, tools, templates, SOPs and best practices which sustain the ATS brand in North America (i.e. Cost Book, quote document, Risk Assessment).
  • Set the context for a high-performance culture within Applications, North America.  Ensure that staff are hired, focused, and developed to the performance standards, competency requirements, succession plans and compensation strategy set by the Vice President, Sales and Business Development, North America.  
  • Ensure the development and efficacy of knowledge transfer tools and processes which drives technical knowledge sharing between divisions. 
  • Direct the distribution of RFQs within North America to optimize capacity and leverage centers of experience/excellence.
  • Lead the formulation of the Applications operating budget. Provide context and parameters to managers, which results in the production of timely, accurate quotations.
  • Authorize quotes which exceed parameters set for Managers.  Establish a mutually agreeable variance range with Operations in regard to quote-to-actual resource utilization.  Resolve issues arising from variances between quote and actual resource utilization with Operations. 
  • Set measures, reporting and contingency planning requirements for tracking performance within the function.  Deliver results in line with approved forecasts and budget.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Responsible for the TEST business innovation funnel development with specific KPI’s around number of ideas inducted and viability of those ideas.   
  • Responsible to work directly with idea owners to help develop and present those ideas to the organization for approval.     
  • Consult on opportunities as they are developed and prototyped.   This includes defining and supporting the refinement of requirements for new technologies through the innovation process. 
  • Engage customers to understand their innovation roadmaps, identifying opportunities for joint development.  
  • Analyze industry trends and feedback from the Sales Department to identify opportunities for innovation that will achieve competitive advantages for ATS.  
  • Establish and maintain relationships with strategic third-party suppliers and academic institutions that result in the development of next-generation tools and products that will enable ATS to deliver to its customers. 
  • Research new breakthrough technologies or companies, that if developed further would provide ATS a significant differentiator in the marketplace.  
  • Support the M&A team in their activities. 
  • Prepare justification for New Innovation spend working with finance and the innovation execution team. 
  • Communicate and promote the adoption of new innovations to internal divisions and customers.  
  • Work with the legal department and design to develop IP protection and patents.  
  • Generate R&D budgets and proposals for approval for future development initiatives.


  • 10 years’ experience in mechanical or electrical engineering support, preferably in Assembly & Test automation environment.  
  • Must have a working knowledge of robotics, machine controls and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology.
  • An ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear, concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential.
  • Must be experienced in IP management along with R&D and product development.
  • You must possess proven organizational, problem solving and time management skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communications is essential.
