  • Administrative and technical supervision of the Mechanical Design Team. 
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of Automated Test and Information Systems including instrumentation, fixturing, tooling, and material handling. 
  • Each implementation specific to the customer and project requirements.


  • Supervise and oversee the design team and to complete projects efficiently according to established schedules and consistent with specified quality standards.
  • Review project schedules on a timely basis to ensure the mechanical design portion of projects are completed on time, take steps to make sure that if projects are slipping to get these back on track, co-ordinate above with other departments as required.
  • Provide mechanical design development inputs to Project Management for scheduling purposes.
  • Distribute scheduling requirements to Designers and monitor for performance reviews.
  • Track job schedules and tasks with individual Department Staff and provide regular updates to Project Management.
  • Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the design, manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties, keep track of engineering change notices through Mechanical Designers and Project Managers.
  • Co-ordinates accurate documentation for each project through staff supervision and review.
  • Review department resource levels with Mechanical Design Manager to ensure adequate Mechanical Design staff are available for scheduled and future projects.
  • Involved in the interview process when hiring new personnel.
  • Completes employee reviews in an accurate and timely manner.  Recommends salary adjustments, promotions, discharges and disciplinary measures for direct reports.
  • Works with the management team and other Divisional groups to implement continual improvement and consistently meet corporate objectives.  Involved in developing department objectives to assist in meeting divisional objectives.
  • Works with customers, Project Managers, Software Developers, Designers, Toolmakers and Technicians to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a complete functional system.
  • Verify at the design and validation stage of each project that the mechanical design meets the mechanical design department standard practices and design standards.
  • Assists in the debug and commissioning of machines on the shop floor or on the customers site.
  • Provides customers with training specific to their current project.
  • Develops design standards and methods for department implementation.  Reviews existing standards to ensure currency.
  • Actively promotes the development of reusable mechanical solutions and assist Mechanical Designers in the reuse of existing standard solutions from previous projects.
  • Actively peruses new technology and opportunities related to our industry and products.
  • Pursue training in new development tools and technologies and direct Mechanical Designers towards appropriate training opportunities to increase their value to the company.
  • Adheres to ISO9001 divisional procedures.
  • Works towards company wide continual improvement goals.
  • Provide technical sales support to the Applications Department when quoting new business.
  • Ensures that all personnel, over whom they have responsibility, comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and its Regulations and the ATS Health and Safety Program.
  • Ensure that all persons having authority over workers, acquaint those workers with any hazard in the work, handling, storage, use, disposal, and transport of any article, device, equipment, or biological, chemical, or physical agent.
  • Assist and co-operate with the Joint Health and Safety Committee and its representatives in the carrying out of their functions.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS code of business conduct.



  • A post secondary diploma or degree specializing in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent experience. 
  • Additional leadership training or equivalent experience would also be an asset.



  • A minimum of five years’ experience supervising the mechanical design function or similar engineering position, in a machine shop, custom tooling or manufacturing industry.
  • Additional leadership training or equivalent experience would also be an asset.
