We are looking for a bright and talented Mechanical Toolmaker to join our team in Wixom, Michigan. 

MAJOR DUTIES

The ideal candidate will have experience machining, fitting, assembling and building precision tooling, special purpose machinery and mechanical assemblies for robotic work cells and factory automation projects.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Interpret drawings and other specifications to determine best practices, using knowledge of tool design and shop mathematics.

•    Measure, mark and scribe metal stock to lay out for machining.

•    Prepare parts using hand tools, milling machines, lathes, grinders and other toolroom equipment.

•    Verify dimensions and alignments, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks.

•    Understand the manufacture of details, review tolerances on prints, understand GD&T and where to apply. 

•    Must be able to recognize function and relationship of all details within assemblies.

•    Involved in bench assembly, completing any pre-hosing.     

•    Proceed with floor assembly according to floor plan layout, assembling the job in a safe and proper order according to procedures, providing the other departments with the tooling needed to accomplish their tasks according to the schedule.  

•    Advise designers of any design issues and collaborate with the team to resolve. Escalate unresolved issued as required.

•    Perform rework efficiently to ensure minimal impact to budget and schedule. 

•    Ensure that all rework is properly recorded and approved

•    Able to use all tools involved in floor assembly.

•    Floor assemble stations onto cells using cell layouts, mount valve banks, complete pneumatics hosing and verify station alignment; able to complete all basic task associated with floor assembly.

•    Advise designers of any design issues and collaborate with the team to resolve. Escalate unresolved issued as required.

•    Perform rework efficiently to ensure minimal impact to budget and schedule. 

•    Ensure that all rework is properly recorded and approved

•    Report any issues regarding fit, function or design to the toolmaker or manager.   

•    Involved in integration of system, and may be asked to handle customer parts during debug and acceptance.

  • Be an ambassador for ATS at the customer’s site, providing a quick and efficient installation of the equipment.  Follow all safety procedures according to the ATS Health and Safety Manual in addition to following any onsite customer health and safety procedures.
  • Communicate and be a channel of any constructive or objective ideas that arise, helping to keep the manufacturing standards up-to-date and at the highest level. Work with the Manager to be a positive, motivating force within the team.  Use the team as a pool of technical knowledge, solving problems together efficiently.
  • Acquire tools to perform graduated machine building tasks.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct and Employee Handbook.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position requires a practical working knowledge of the operation of all toolroom equipment, an ability to read blueprints
  • A positive attitude with technical aptitude or background is required
  • Knowledge of mechanical drawings and practices, electrical diagrams, schematics and practices, pneumatics and general assembly procedures is required.
  • 5 - 10 years of experience building custom automation machinery. 
  • Ability to operate skyjack, forklift and crane
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work overtime as required due to project demands
  • The ability to travel internationally is required.

 

Education:

A grade 12 diploma specializing in drafting and machine shop or equivalent is required.
Associate Technical Degree or experience in an automation/manufacturing environment is preferred
