MAJOR DUTIES
Set-up and operate various machine-tools such as lathes manual mills and grinders; fit and sub assemble parts to make or repair mechanical systems; bench and floor assembly of fixtures; plumbing of pneumatic and hydraulic circuits; apply knowledge of mechanisms, shop mathematics, basic metrology methods, lay-out and assembly procedures and blue print reading.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interpret specifications, drawings or sample parts to determine the most suitable and economical manufacturing and assembly processes. Plan sequence of machining operations.
- Compute dimensions and tolerances and prepare working sketches from general descriptions and by examining parts and their mating surfaces.
- Bench assemble and validate tooling, jigs and fixtures for automated test equipment integration with electro-mechanical sub-assemblies and system components.
- Measure, mark and scribe center lines, dimensions and reference points on machine bases prior to floor assembly of the bench assemblies.
- Select and install cutting tools in machines.
- Verify conformance of manufactured parts to specifications, using measuring instruments; such as, scales, calipers, micrometers and fixed gauges.
- Floor assemble subassemblies onto a fixture including tooling setup, plumbing and trouble shooting.
- Participate or lead in the customer buy-off and commission the equipment at the customer site.
- Provide training for customer personnel.
- Maintain machines and tools related to the assembly processes.
- Maintain cleanliness of personal work areas and job zones.
- Mentor junior staff.
- Work well in a team with more junior or senior staff from other disciplines.
- Recommend design changes to parts with regard to improving manufacturing, assembly and maintenance processes.
- Attend design reviews as required.
- Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS code of business conduct.
- Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Certificate of Qualification as a Tool Maker.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years experience, not including an apprenticeship program, working as a machine builder.
