Automation Technician/Technologist Team Leader

Major Duties

As a leader of a highly motivated, dynamic, multi-disciplined team, you will work together to integrate world - class automation solutions. Duties involve integration of software with electrical and mechanical systems, process verification and machine installation at customer sites worldwide (if in project scope). Provide guidance, training and project monitoring to the various teams targeting KPI’s for on time delivery safety and quality of machines.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the Automation Technician, a Team Leader’s responsibilities also include the duties listed below.

Job Description

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • General supervision, training, and guidance of all Automation Technician and Technologist that are part of his/her team.
  • Collaborates with Applications Engineering team in support of proposals.
  • Works with other members of the project team, both ATS and non-ATS, that provides the functionality required, based on ATS standards and the customers controls specifications.
  • Participates in development and implementation of tools, methods and modules ensuring standards maintained.
  • Review and approve all ATS People transactions, including timesheet and vacation approvals.
  • Monitor performance of staff, identify training and development needs.
  • With support of your manager formally review employee’s development during performance reviews.
  • With the support of your manager deliver corrective actions as required
  • Works with other members of the REM Engineering department and other teams to continuously improve methods and tools for integrating controls technology, driving enhanced safety and functionality.
  • Conduct on the job observation with team members.
  • Works with team members to ensure that cost and schedule budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
  • Assigns his/her team to the day to day direct labour activities.
  • Ensures, checks and approves that all work product produced by his/her team members are acceptable based on the functionality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.
  • Maintains labour, material and schedule forecast information and any appropriate execution improvement plans provided to Program Management for programs assigned to his/her team.
  • Ensures that scheduled milestones relating to project integration are achieved.
  • Provides primary technical assessments of team members to the department manager for performance evaluations with current and future personnel.
  • Collaborate with Program Manager to set goals and manage successful performance for his/her team members.
  • Leads and mentors his/her team members..
  • Works with team members, customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a product or service compliant with their requirements.
  • Ensures that all employees, under their direction, are aware of, and follow all Health and Safety procedures, established by the Company.
  • Ensures that all employees receive job specific training so as to be able to work effectively, and where needed, provide the employee with written instructions.
  • Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Work in compliance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures.
  • Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
  • Report defect in any equipment or protective device.
  • Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned tasks.
  • Attend all required health, safety and environmental training.
  • Report any accidents/incidents to manager.
  • Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements

  • Verify all certified electricians due to arc flash and shock hazards, voltage-rated gloves and 100% cotton, long-sleeve shirts must be worn at all times when working on live panels.
  • Employees must comply at all times with the specific PPE requirements identified on the ARC Flash and Shock Hazard Warning Labels (see below for your information.) These will be posted at Switchgear locations, breaker panels, bus ducts and equipment related power drops.
  • Use of specific PPE approved for Laser safety eyes and skin protection during integration.
  • Safe use of the hold to run switch and only authorized persons to use.
  • Ensure all project safety documentation are signed off for awareness.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent qualification, specializing in electrical, mechanical or software controls technology.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an industrial development environment, producing controls for automated assembly systems. Proven leadership qualities including; good oral and written communication skills, ability to work with and motivate team members, and a willingness to take responsibility for key aspects needed for job completion. This includes hands-on experience in programming and trouble-shooting with current PLC hardware, and programming software.
  • Must have a minimum of three years’ experience leading a team with a proven track record of providing positive leadership and coordination of tasks


Supervisor responsibilities for Health, Safety and Environment include:

  • Ensure that equipment, materials and protective devices are functioning in a safe manner
  • Ensure that employees are working in accordance with divisional health and safety procedures
  • Applies progressive discipline as appropriate for health, safety and/or environmental violations
  • Advise employees of the existence of any potential or actual health and safety risks
  • Provide appropriate instruction for safe work
  • Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of employees
  • Conduct periodic inspections and audits in accordance with legislative and/or corporate requirements
  • Conduct accident/incident investigations, prepare necessary reports and communicate to line management, health and safety personnel and health and safety committee
  • Ensure that all employees, including temporary workers and contractors, adhere to safety requirements including the use of personal protective equipment
  • Support activities and initiatives outlined by the Joint Health and Safety Committee
