Industrial Electrician - Innovation

The ATS Innovation Centre is looking for a creative and self-starting individual to join the team with the focus on driving the electrical assembly of new rapid prototypes, POP’s, and full-scale proof of concept equipment. This role will provide you with additional exposure to the innovation process, new technologies, other disciplines, and opportunities to develop project leadership. If you are looking for a role to strengthen existing skills while developing new skills and take on new challenges, being part of the innovation assembly team may be for you. The role may require travel to the innovation facility in Kingston, Ontario.

Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES: 
Under general direction, builds, installs, integrates and troubleshoots electrical wiring systems, electronic components, hardware, and equipment with a quality and timely focus in order to build rapid prototypes, full-scale prototypes, special-purpose machinery, robotic work cells, and factory automation projects.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 
•    From time to time you may be asked to fulfill the lead role for your discipline.
•    From time to time you may be asked to assist with other duties in the shop such as equipment assembly, material organization, and prototype debug and start up.
•    From time to time lead execution of acceptance testing
•    Take direction from the Manager, Innovation Operations and/or the designated Group Lead.
•    Using the electrical design package, manufacturer documentation, and specifications for reference; plans and coordinates work required to assemble and wire control panels, HMI’s, and other sub-assemblies.
•    Take components for a rapid prototype, understand the objectives, and be able to use the manufacturer documentation and knowledge to wire up components for testing with minimal support.
•    Use the MRP system to check on availability of parts for the job.
•    Organize and plan work based on Innovation projects assigned.
•    Perform panel wiring, cell wiring, and system wiring including the installation of conduits and wireways.
•    Report any issues regarding workmanship or design to the group lead or the Manager, Innovation Operations.
•    Ensure that all print updates are completed, and that rework is properly documented.
•    Following OHSC rules and regulations; determine power requirements for projects and install bus plugs, conduits, and cord drops to transformers and/or directly to control panel disconnects.
•    Using established procedures for “Power up and Test” perform power up, electrical testing, and troubleshooting of the control system in order to enable the start of integration.  Repair and/or replace defective components in the system as required.
•    Work with the electrical team, project managers, customers, designers, toolmakers, and programmers to solve problems in order to provide a complete and functional system. 
•    Assist in providing status of completion information in order to maintain Project Status Sheets.
•    Participate in tear down and shipping of the equipment, dismantling in an orderly fashion to minimize installation time at the customers’ site. 
•    Assist in training apprentices according to ATS manufacturing standards and to the Industrial Electrician apprenticeship training standards.  
•    Communicate and be a channel for any constructive or objective ideas that arise, helping to keep the manufacturing standards up-to-date and at the highest level.  Use the team as a pool of technical knowledge, solving problems together efficiently.
•    Infrequent travel to other ATS sites, such as the Kingston Innovation Center, as required for Innovation related projects.
 

Additional Information

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • A Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Electrician, a Construction and Maintenance Electrician or equivalent certifications from other Provinces or Countries.

Experience:

  • A completed apprenticeship and/or two to three years of hands-on electrical wiring, troubleshooting and maintenance experience as a licensed electrician.  Preference will be given to those with electronics, machine building, programming and robotics expertise.  Must be capable of working in a team environment and be able to maintain a positive attitude and consistent contribution to the projects assigned.
