Global Manager, Mechanical Design Manufacturing Solutions

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Rate: $124,000 - $170,500

Specific Responsibilites

•    Assess workload, update, and forecast labor loading, assign staff to engineering projects and oversee the completion of drawings according to specific deadlines and project schedules.
•    Review project schedules and ensure detailed design plans match schedule and budget requirements on a timely basis to ensure the mechanical automation engineering portion of projects are completed on time and take corrective action, coordinating with other departments as required.
•    Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.
•    Critique and approve all respective design work under their charge.  
•    Conduct/oversee employee performance evaluations recommend salary adjustments, and initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, discharges, and disciplinary measures for staff reporting to him/her.
•    Encourage and mentor direct employees to ensure that departmental morale and efficiency are maintained at the highest level. Conduct regular 1:1 with Group leads and direct reports
•    Support employee training by analyzing needs on an annual basis using the training matrix
•    Based on business goals and annual growth, establish resource requirements skills and organizational needs that will sustain adequate capacity and leadership within the department.
•    Coach team members on ABM processes, A3s, RCAs, cost benefit analysis, process development
•    Lead daily team meetings
•    When required, travel to support Mechanical Designers in IA’s Global Operation
•    Prioritize resources to ensure all work is achieved. Work closely with Engineering Group Leads to ensure resources are properly deployed. 
•    Deploy Visual Management tools for Engineering Team (i.e., Control Board)
•    Develop & deploy Team KPIs (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Productivity, Cost, and Employee Engagement)
•    Measure departmental KPI results and rework and develop improvement plans where required.
•    Set objectives on a yearly basis that align with business unit objectives and track progress throughout the year on those objectives.
•    Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.  
•    Provide technical support to the Applications and Sales departments when quoting new business. 
•    Interview and select applicants on their technical qualifications and suitability for positions in the department when hiring new personnel.
•    Support the business unit quality system by maintaining quality procedures, job descriptions, and responding to NCR’s and CAR’s.
•    Measure departmental throughput and rework and develop improvement plans where required.
•    Drive and maintain lean practices in factory automation, that support the competitiveness of IA Manufacturing Solutions.
•    Support employee training and development by assessing specific employee needs on an annual basis minimally.
•    With the Director, collaborate on developing a departmental budget on an annual basis.
•    Develop outside contractors in anticipation of overload situations.
•    Maintain a co-operative working relationship with your counterparts in other ATS business units

•    Advocate and foster a team environment within both the department and throughout the business unit.
•    Hold departmental communications meetings on a regular basis (minimum once per quarter).
•    Emphasize continuous improvement as a long-term goal and with the Director, implement procedures and programs to achieve continuous improvement in this area.
•    Act as back-up coverage for Director, Engineering as required
•    Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
•    Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.

Financial Performance:
•    Deliver on the departmental initiatives prescribed by the Director.  
•    Report on team project status using the project status tracking system.  
•    Ensure optimal utilization of resources within the team.  
•    Manage the team within the budget parameters by forecasting, implementing and defining resource plans and alerting the Director of project variances within time frames that prevent budget over-runs.
•    With the Director, collaborate on developing a departmental budget on an annual basis.

Quality Improvement:
•    Perform SWOT analysis on team performance as required by the Director.  
•    Recommend and direct the implementation of best practices and standard designs to improve quality.
•    Execute ABM continuous improvement projects.  
•    Measure and report on quality performance data.
•    Support the business unit quality system by maintaining quality system procedures, conducting a departmental audit and responding to NCR’s/CAR’s.

Technology Development:
•    Assess new technology to meet project requirements as authorized by the Director. 
•    Report on performance of strategic third party suppliers. 
•    Execute innovative programs to meet industry demand.  
•    Recommend and enforce design and engineering procedures and standard practices to comply with industry specific regulatory requirements.

Safety:
•    Demonstrate leadership in Health, Safety and Environment compliance.
•    Hold team members accountable for health, safety and environmental compliance as part of the annual performance review process.
•    Ensure that the requirements of the health, safety and environment management system are implemented and maintained.
•    Carry out hazard assessments, inspections, and audits as required by legislative framework and/or corporate requirements.
•    Ensure that training is provided to all departmental employees are per established in the training matrix.
•    Implement appropriate corrective measures for unsafe conditions and unsafe acts.
•    Ensure that appropriate equipment, materials and protective devices are provided and maintained in safe condition.
•    Provide information, instruction and supervision to employees.
•    Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of employees.
•    Attend HSE Due Diligence for Management training sessions.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A post-secondary degree in, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Technologist or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 – 10 years of experience in automated tooling and equipment design, development and testing.
  • 2 or more years of demonstrated experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the systems design process, mechanics/mechatronics, robotics, vision systems, machine controls, structured problem solving, DOE, common manufacturing principles, superior drafting skills, practical GD&T application, precision engineering principles is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to lead and work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team is essential.
  • Experience in radio-pharmaceuticals automation, structural engineering, pressure boundary design and GAMP/GMP is an asset.

The Compensation offered will be based on the local job market and may vary depending on factors such as the job-related knowledge, skills, experience of the selected candidate, as well as other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of these benefit plans will be provided when the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
