Hardware Engineering Team Lead (Automation Electrical Design Lead)

Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY:


Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of a group of Controls Engineering Designers who produce complete controls solutions and electrical design packages based on customer specifications and standardized design practices used at ATS. This includes ensuring the quality and content of the deliverables generated by the group.

 


Responsibilities include:

  • General supervision, training, and guidance of all CE Hardware Designers that are part of his/her team.
  • Responsible for loading and assignment of tasks to employees and contractors within their group.
  • Accountable for the quality, content and on-time delivery of deliverables issued by their group.
  • Participate in recruitment activities and onboarding of new group members.
  • Facilitates daily visual management meetings with their group.
  • Collaborates with Applications Engineering team in support of proposals and owns the jobs won from concept to through-life support.
  • Participates in development and implementation of tools, methods and modules ensuring standards maintained.
  • Works with other members of the CE Hardware department to continuously improve methods and tools for integrating controls technology, driving enhanced safety and functionality.
  • Works with members of the CE Hardware department and other teams to ensure that cost and schedule budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
  • Ensures, checks and approves that all work product produced by his/her design team members are acceptable based on the functionality, quality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.
  • Approves all material requisitions for projects assigned to his/her team.
  • Maintains labour, material and schedule forecast information and any appropriate improvement plans provided to Program Management for programs assigned to his/her team.
  • Collaborate with CE Hardware manager to set goals and manage successful performance for his/her team members.
  • Provides primary technical assessments of team members to the department manager for performance evaluations with current and future personnel.
  • Leads and mentors his/her team members.
  • Formulate and produce complete electrical design packages, which include detailed schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials and material requisition forms, based on ATS standard specifications and the customers’ requirements.
  • Integrate third party equipment and electronic component entry into electrical design package. Examples include serial communications, hardware handshaking, opto-isolation, electrical and ultrasonic welding applications, vision systems, motion control products, transducers and signal conditioners.
  • Verify that electrical design packages are complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards, and that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
  • Works with team members, customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems to provide the customer with a product or service compliant with their requirements.
  • Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Understand and ensure that all designs comply with relevant automation design and safety standards, including industry regulations and company-specific guidelines.

Qualifications

Education:

A post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent qualification, specializing in electrical, electronic or controls technology.


Experience:

  • 8 years’ experience in electrical control systems design, preferably in the industrial automation field. A working knowledge of AutoCAD/EPlan and the ability to keep abreast of leading-edge technology is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in an industrial development environment, producing controls for automated assembly systems. Proven leadership qualities including good oral and written communication skills, ability to work with and motivate team members, and a willingness to take responsibility for key aspects needed for job completion.
