Manager- Nuclear Applications Engineering

Major Duties

The Manager of Nuclear Applications Engineering is responsible for overseeing a diverse range of technological reviews and coordinating activities to support the development of proposals for automation tooling and systems tailored to meet the needs of nuclear customers. This includes conducting comprehensive reviews of concepts, costing, and proposals generated by the nuclear applications engineering team. The manager holds the ultimate responsibility for reviewing and approving these proposals, ensuring they align with the technical requirements and specifications outlined by nuclear customers.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Reviews customer RFQ prior to assigning to applications engineering staff.
  • Reviews initial concepts with applications engineer to ensure proper direction is taken; approves final concept prior to costing.
  • In projects where technical complexity is large, the applications engineering manager will involve key members of engineering and supply chain management in risk analysis, Proof of Principle activities, cycle time development, conceptual layout and costing.
  • Reviews and approves final costing as part of the Total Cost Commitment (TCC) process.
  • Works with Finance and Scheduling to complete the Bid Form and Approval process.
  • Ensures applications contract review and project kick-off procedures are followed.
  • Responsible for the quality and content of proposals issued by the Nuclear Applications Engineering Department for all types of automation tooling, equipment and projects.
  • Travels to the customer’s site to assist in Front End of the Business (FEOB) sales activities and proposal development support s required.  
  • Work with Director of Applications to guide department direction and initiatives.
  • Assessing industry trends to identify opportunities for innovation that will achieve strategic advances for ATS.
  • Recommend and implement best practices and updates to standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Overseeing the performance, development, and training of the nuclear applications engineering team members. This includes setting goals, providing feedback, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.

Qualifications

Education:

•    A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design or engineering.
•    Additional qualifications or certifications related to automation, robotics, or machine controls would be advantageous.
 

Experience:

•    A minimum of five years of experience in mechanical design, engineering or equivalent career experience, preferably within an automation environment. 
•    Must have a working knowledge of robotics, machine controls and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology.
•    Experience in the nuclear industry would be beneficial but not mandatory. Candidates with prior exposure to nuclear applications or similar highly regulated industries would have an advantage.  
•    An ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear, concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential. 
•    Demonstrated experience in team building, performance management, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
•    Leadership qualities such as the ability to motivate and mentor team members, make informed decisions, and drive projects forward would be valuable in this role.
