Project Manager

Major Duties

As a Project Manager at ATS Industrial Automation, you will take ownership of complex, high-value automation projects from purchase order through to final installation and customer acceptance. In this dynamic and highly visible role, you will be the primary point of contact for our customers—guiding them through each phase of the project while ensuring every solution is delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the highest technical and quality standards.

You will lead and motivate cross-functional teams spanning engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and commissioning to drive project performance and achieve critical milestones. Your ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on coordination will be key to managing risk, resolving challenges, and maintaining strong customer relationships.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Leads the project team to execute projects on schedule, at or below budget delivering the contracted scope of work to all applicable codes and standards.
  • Key customer contact for assigned projects. Responsible for customer satisfaction. Maintain regular contact (verbal and written) with key customer representative(s) ensuring all key project events and issues are documented in writing;

        Project Schedule, Risk, Financial, and Change Management:

  • Develop Project Plan. Conduct Initial Project Build Plan meeting. Oversee project schedule development and identify all critical path activities.
  • Lead assessment and identification of project risks. Develop and manage Risk Mitigation Plan(s). Manage budget allocations for ATS labour, materials and risks.
  • Prepare accurate financial and resource forecasts. Prepare reports as required by ATS Management. Escalate deficiencies to department managers or Program Manager.
  • Drive accountability by ensuring all project deliverables are accomplished and supporting documentation is prepared for each project milestone payment. Obtain necessary customer approvals needed to enable on-time payment of invoices, including final payment and project closure. Working with the financial analyst, ensure all invoices are submitted on time.
  • Collaborate with department leads to manage project staffing. Ensure adequate technical staff are assigned to all project tasks when needed.
  • Develop customer Change Order Requests to manage changes to scope. Ensure formal agreements are in place with customers before changes to scope are acted upon.
    Team Leadership:
  • Leads regular team communications meetings to ensure project goals and milestones are understood and project challenges are communicated and overcome.
    Lead by example. Encourages and mentors employees to ensure that the build team’s morale and efficiency is maintained at the highest level.
  • Manage projects and project teams in accordance with all applicable ATS procedures and ensure project teams follow the required procedures
  • Coordinate the post project employee assessment process to collect team input on how to improve project and process performance.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Lead Project Safety. Ensure that all project activities are conducted in accordance with ATS and Legal standards, including work at ATS and at customer sites. Demonstrate leadership in HSE compliance and hold team members accountable for HSE compliance. Carry out hazard assessments, inspections, and audits as required.
  • Participate or lead continuous improvement activities using the ATS Business Model (ABM) tools and processes within ATS and with customers to drive improved results.
    Customer Relationship Management:
  • Travel to customers’ sites for project kickoffs, status reports, installations, buyoffs and other check-in meetings. Travel could be local within Canada, to the US or international.
  • Act as an advocate for our customers within ATS. Ensure our customers and ATS are mutually successful.
  • Deliver maximum customer satisfaction, by ensuring risks, open issues and customer concerns are managed in a proactive and professional manner.
  • Elevate customer issues when required to the next level of ATS management
  • Partner with ATS account manager to manage the customer
  • Assists Applications Engineering with preparing quotations and customer interaction.
    Management Reporting:
  • Attend the project status meeting as requested by the Program Manager and/or Director, Project Management.
    For larger programs, this position may report to a Program Manager.

  • Work in conformance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures and compliance to legislative requirements;
  • Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods;
  • Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts, defect in any equipment or protective device, and any accidents/incidents to the supervisor;
  • Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks. Attend all required health, safety and environmental training;
  • Assist in investigating accidents/incidents where applicable;

Qualifications

Education:

  • Post- secondary College Diploma, Engineering Degree or equivalent; specializing in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical or Controls Engineering.  
  • PMP Certification is an asset. Willingness to obtain PMP Certification within 2 years of start date is a requirement.
     
    Experience:
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with multi-disciplined project teams, preferably in an automation or systems integration environment.
  • Experience managing a project portfolio of in excess of $5M at any time or individual projects of $3M or greater with a proven track record of providing positive leadership and coordination to a multi-disciplined project design and construction team.
  • Must have a practical working understanding of factory automation tools and processes covering such area as: PLC’s, robotics, automated manufacturing, or similar.  
  • Preference will be given to those who possess an excellent manufacturing or process engineering background, a superior technical aptitude and proven trouble-shooting skills.  
  • An ability to work effectively with Customers according to deadlines and under pressure-filled conditions is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others and to complete related management tasks on time.
