Job Description
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Vision Systems Design
· Participate in quote preparation and ensure vision design concept meets process requirements.
· Capture vision/optical/control system requirements and specific design details by writing Requirement, Design, Verification, Validation and Calibration Specifications.
· Define machine vision performance requirements in inspection, assembly, and functional process systems across a wide variety of industries such as automotive, semi-conductor, and pharmaceutical/medical.
· Determine opto-mechanical, electrical and software interface requirements of the vision system to the machine.
· Concept and design turnkey machine vision solutions. This includes all lighting, optics, cameras, frame-grabbers, processing algorithms, opto-mechanical fixtures and material handling units.
· Perform analysis and simulation of optical and lighting solutions.
· Develop image processing applications using commercial or in-house vision software libraries, including application GUI’s.
· Integrate and test vision modules on the machine during integration and buyoff phases.
· Ensure the design of the vision system maximizes the use of standard practices and modules.
Project Management
· Coordinate project activities with suppliers of third party equipment.
· Coordinate and collaborate with the mechanical, electrical and software departments to ensure systems are implemented as designed.
· Assist and guide the project team to identify critical path and dependencies between project activities and ensure implementation details match design specification
· Assist in the overall machine systems engineering, including analysis and design.
· Assist the Imaging Director in the supervision of Vision Designers.
· Manage project scope and be responsible for regular reporting on project status including both hardware and labour costs vs. budget
Standard Product Development and Management
· Determine machine vision module capability using statistical and other industry standard verification and validation techniques.
· Identify high risk areas and evaluate different approaches to mitigate risks, including quoting, designing, implementing and conducting Proof of Principle or Engineering Studies.
· Assist with continuous machine vision design improvements on production machines.
· Develop vision systems design standards and procedures.
· Perform evaluation of new products in machine vision and optics based manufacturing.
· Participate regularly in new product brain storming sessions and foster an environment of innovation and creation when looking at the challenges of solving customer application needs
· Manage established product offerings and drive improvement ideas and developments to keep the product at a world class leading position
· Assist the Imaging Applications Manager in the marketing and sales of current and future Imaging products
Qualifications
Education:
· At least a post-secondary degree in an Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics program required. Strong preference will be given to those with a Masters, PhD or equivalent experience.
Experience:
· This is a very technically challenging role, requiring a good mix of theory and hands-on practice.
· A minimum of five years of experience with machine vision, motion control and/or robotics in system design and integration of factory automation projects is required.
· Demonstrated proficiency in at least one object oriented programming language and Image processing algorithms is essential.
· Strong preference will be given to designers with a proven background in the development of optical, illumination and machine vision systems.
· Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team are essential.
