Service Mechanical Designer

 

Job Description

The Service Mechanical Designer (SMD) is responsible for all mechanical design activity in the ATS Life Science Cambridge technical services department. Responsible for making design changes for retrofit projects, generating concept design, releasing drawings for production, providing input for quoting design work effort, and supporting the service team.

 

Responsibilities include:

•    Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
•    Select appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
•    Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.
•    Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
•    Formalize and update drawing documentation.
•    Organize documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc. on projects you are assigned to.
•    Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
•    Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
•    Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
•    Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e. OSHA, CE or customer specific).
•    Liaise with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff.
•    Liaise with vendors for technical information and specifications.
•    Communicate all requested design changes to the Project Manager.
•    Responsible for communicating progress on tasks to the Mechanical Design - Team Lead
•    Create drawings of existing tooling through the use of precision measuring devices such as verniers and micrometers.
•    Responsible for communicating time estimates and resource requirements on design tasks to the Mechanical Design - Team Lead and Project Manager.
•    Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
•    Assist the Field Service Representative, Fabricators, Machinists, Toolmakers and Electricians in the debug, integration resolving problems and completion of systems.
•    Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment and problems involved in designing, changing or re-arranging materials.
•    Periodically oversee co-op students on various projects.
•    Assist with Recommended Spare Part’s List (RSPLs) – identifying spare parts and processing orders as needed.
 

Qualifications

Education
•    A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent.

 

Experience
•    A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience required
•    A minimum of 3 years experience with focus on of automation design or equivalent required
•    or 10+ of Machine Building, Integration & Troubleshooting in Automated Assembly systems, with CAD experience.Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills. 
•    displays professionalism and has well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of customer and ATS management in a multi-disciplined engineering environment under pressure. 
•    
•    Automation knowledge and experience is an asset. 
•    Attention to detail and being well organized in engineering document management system is essential. 
•    Individual must have the ability to quickly gain knowledge to readily support troubleshooting systems. 
•    Successful candidates will be self-motivated & can problem solve when the process or next steps are not clear.  
•    The candidate must be able to work independently, however should be comfortable asking question when the path forward is unclear.
•    Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles and GD&T principles and how they are applied 
•    Must be proficient in Draft Sight and SolidWorks.
•    Have experience with Microsoft 365 software applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Teams
•    Must be capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
•    Must be capable of working as part of a team.
•    A thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatics and hydraulics.
•    A thorough knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.).
