Job Description
The Applications Engineer I performs a wide variety duties supporting the applications group assessing customers’ and markets’ requirements in support of sales and business development activities, reviews performance and overall systems requirements, functional data with the engineering group; assists in preparing detailed proposals for potential and existing accounts/customers. Capable of efficiently leading and executing proposal development and approval process for a range of systems. These systems will vary in size and complexity, but are not limited to, proposals ranging from < $550K – $2M in customer value.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Support activities necessary for conceptual development, preparation of cost model and writing. detailed technical proposals for all types of automation equipment and projects.
- Assist engineers and other technical staff in design and development of products, systems, processes and equipment by analyzing technical problems and working closely to customer specifications.
- Direct Project Procurement Leads (PPL) in sourcing and interacting with third party vendors and suppliers in the developing final solutions.
- Prepare or assist in preparing vendor technical specifications (VTSs).
- Travel to the customer's site to assist in project or product development, working with engineering design specifications, objectives and standards.
- Obtain and prepare detailed estimates of time, quantities, labor and material costs required for work areas such as; product design, testing, machine building, equipment installations and manufacturing processes.
- Assemble and collect all necessary technical information and customer specifications from engineering and sales & marketing, in order to prepare detailed proposals.
- Prepare or assist in preparing compliance matrices.
- Assist in special projects in support for engineering and sales and marketing.
- Adequately defines scope of work in proposals to allow project manager and project team to execute a successful project.
- Meets agreed upon goals and objectives in a timely manner.
- Arrive to work, meetings, appointments, and other work-related functions on time and as scheduled.
- Adhere to International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards.
- Support enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation.
- Support (program and service) vision engineering, installation and field needs.
- Comply with all ATS Company policies.
- Full compliance to the terms and conditions within the employee signed work from home policy.
- Assist and attend technical seminars and industry exhibitions.
- Other duties as assigned.

HEALTH, SAFETY, & ENVIRONMENTAL (HSE) REQUIREMENTS:
- Work in compliance with ATS Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures.
- Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) methods.
- Actively pursue a duty to act where any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts are witnessed.
- Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts to your leader.
- Escalate any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts which leaders do not address to the General Manager (GM).
- Report any defect in any equipment or protective device.
- Ensure that the required personal protective equipment (PPE) is used for the assigned task.
- Complete all required Health, Safety, and Environmental training.
- Report any accidents/incidents, including near misses to your supervisor.
- Assist in investigating any accidents/incidents or near misses if requested.
- Refrain from engaging in any unruly conduct.
- Ensure that equipment, materials and protective devices are functioning in a safe manner
- Ensure that employees are working in accordance with divisional health and safety procedures
- Do not report to work onsite, at a customer’s site, or travel on behalf of ATS when feeling ill. Contact your leader immediately.
- Conform to all pandemic requirements identified by regulating authorities and ATS leadership during pandemic situations, e.g. social or physical distancing and various PPE requirements.
- You are responsible for yourself relative to sanitizing your environmental footprint, for example:
- Sanitize after use of any common or shared use item within the facility
- Properly dispose of any witnessed trash or rubbish within the facility to the proper receptacle regardless of the source – use of PPE is recommended for anything potentially determined to be a biohazard
- Properly dispose of liquids to prevent improper contaminants into the drain and surrounding water systems.
- Smoke/vape only in designated areas NOT within 15’ of any door.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of science degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial design/engineering.
- One to two (1-2) years of automation experience a plus.
- Thorough understanding of mechanical/electrical design, working knowledge of material handling, robotics, machine controls and manufacturing engineering and processes. Requires solid technical assessment and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated technical proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and design tools such as 2D and 3D software ACAD and SolidWorks.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
- Visual acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.
- Hearing ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
- Working conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting manufacturing floor.
- Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time.
