ROLE SUMMARY:
NCC Automated Systems is a Full-Service Automation Systems Integrator with over 35 years of experience. In addition to integrating some of the world’s best automation equipment solutions, we also offer in-house mechanical and electrical design and manufacturing. We can provide complete turnkey solutions, as well as equipment. In 2021, NCC Automated Systems joined ATS Automation, a publicly traded technology company (TSX: ATA) with facilities focused on Automation and Technology across a wide range of industry verticals.
As part of the Senior Leadership Team, this role is accountable for shaping and executing the engineering strategy for the business unit. The Director, Engineering will drive operational execution, people development, and continuous improvement initiatives to enable consistent project delivery and support long-term, sustainable growth of the business.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, the Director of Engineering is responsible for establishing, overseeing, and driving the strategic direction and execution of all engineering activities across the business. This includes leadership of systems, mechanical, controls, and product development engineering disciplines, with full accountability for project execution from post–purchase order through lifecycle delivery.
As a key member of the Leadership Team, you will play a critical role in building a high-performing engineering organization, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement, and developing talent to support the long-term growth of the business.
The initial focus of the role will be to strengthen engineering execution processes, resource planning, and delivery performance, ensuring consistency in meeting key project metrics such as on-time delivery (OTD), quality, and financial targets. This will require a strong understanding of capital equipment project execution, combined with disciplined engineering practices within a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
In this capacity, you will work closely with Operations, Project Management, Sales, Finance, and key customers to ensure alignment, proactively manage risks, and drive successful project outcomes.
The Director of Engineering will also be instrumental in advancing a culture of continuous improvement across engineering. This includes implementing structured processes, leveraging lean and problem-solving methodologies, and building scalable practices that enable the business to meet customer commitments while supporting sustainable growth.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

- The Director of Engineering is accountable for four key objectives:
- Development of engineering talent and fostering a high-performance, accountable culture within the Engineering team.
- Driving continuous improvement in engineering execution, standardization, and efficiency.
- Delivery of all engineering scope for projects on time, within budget, and aligned to quality expectations (post–purchase order through lifecycle execution).
- Supporting customer satisfaction through consistent, reliable engineering execution and effective cross-functional collaboration.

Your success will be measured by:
Financial & Business Performance:
- Achievement of engineering-related targets aligned to the fiscal plan (Revenue support, EBIT contribution, and project margin performance)
- Maintain and improve on-time delivery (OTD) performance across all engineering deliverables
- Support project cost management through efficient design, scope control, and engineering hours management
- Establish and maintain engineering quality metrics (design accuracy, rework reduction, ECN cycle time)
Engineering Leadership:
- Development of engineering team capability, with a strong focus on people development, engagement, and retention
- Establishing and maintaining engineering execution standards, processes, and accountability frameworks
- Effective resource planning and workload management to align with project demand and business priorities
- Strengthening cross-functional alignment between Engineering, Operations, Project Management, and Sales
Engineering Execution & Delivery:
- Ownership of engineering deliverables across all projects from post–purchase order through execution and lifecycle support
- Ensure readiness and participation in project launch, alignment meetings, pre-build, and FAT activities
- Lead engineering change management processes, including timely ECN review and approvals
- Identify and proactively manage technical risks, ensuring mitigation plans are in place
Continuous Improvement:
- Implement and maintain structured engineering processes to improve consistency, efficiency, and scalability
- Drive adoption of lean problem-solving methodologies within engineering workflows (as applicable)
- Establish visual management and performance tracking mechanisms for engineering activities
Identify and eliminate bottlenecks impacting engineering throughput and delivery
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
- 8+ years of engineering leadership experience.
- Strong leadership and resource planning skills.
