Controls Team Lead
Overview
ATS’ Global Services team is a dynamic, change-leading team that drives the delivery of value-driven Services to our customers worldwide. Services is a growing component of the overall delivery of value to ATS’ customers globally and offers an opportunity for an opportunistic individual to create a well-defined offer structure of high-value service solutions to drive ongoing value.
As a team lead of a highly motivated, dynamic, multi-disciplined team, you will design and develop world-class aftermarket automation solutions. Duties involve contributing to retrofit/upgrading machine concepts, design of control software, integration of software with electrical and mechanical systems, process development and machine installation at customer sites worldwide. Programming and integration assignments involve leading-edge technologies and processes utilizing PLC’s, PC’s, robotics, motion controllers, vision systems, laser, and other controllers. In addition, programming assignments may involve PC computers, and various third-party test instruments or data acquisition devices separately or in combination.
Responsibilities: Team Lead
- General supervision, training, and guidance of all Electrical Controls engineering designers and programmers that are part of their team.
- Will be responsible for managing Global Service functions, including aftermarket, spare parts, warranty, technical support for customers, etc.
- Experience in Service delivery and operational support of aftermarket services.
- Demonstrated abilities in leadership, project management and service delivery to customers and implementation of plans/solutions
- Implementation of plans/solutions to ensure customer satisfaction
- Seeks to understand industry, consumer and category trends and translates those insights into actionable business recommendations to achieve the commercial parts business goals and objectives
- Collaborates with Applications Engineering team in support of proposals and owns the jobs won from concept to through-life support.
- Works with other members of the project team, both ATS and non-ATS, to develop an Electrical Controls design that provides the functionality required, based on ATS standards and the customers specifications.
- Completes annual performance review process for all team members ensuring both technical and behavioral assessments are submitted in a timely manner.
- Set goals for all team members in consultation with management.
- Leads and mentors their team members.
- Works with members of the Management teams to ensure that cost and schedule budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
- Assigns their team to the day-to-day direct labor activities.
- Ensures, checks, and approves that all work produced by the design team members is acceptable based on functionality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.
- Approves all material requisitions for projects assigned to their team.
- Assists with information and any appropriate execution improvement plans provided to Program Management for programs assigned to their team.
- Ensures that scheduled milestones relating to Electrical Controls engineering designs are achieved.
- Reviews and evaluates new Electrical Controls designs related products to provide a cost effective, and up-to-date mechanical solution.
Responsibilities: Controls Engineer
- Develop and program control systems using PLC’s, PC’s, servo drives, robots, and other specialized controllers specific to customer requirements.
- Troubleshoot controls and electrical equipment at the customer’s facility; execute the necessary adjustments to bring equipment up to running status.
- Make programming changes online for retrofitting or upgrading equipment.
- Report and correct abnormal equipment conditions and inaccurate actions by customer staff.
- Ensure alignment of customer objectives with on-site work plan.
- Review/suggest additional tools or equipment to better operate or maintain customer equipment.
- Make recommendations to repair/replace only items that require repair/replacement.
- When assigned as a project lead, lead on-site team, and communicate with customer and ATS Project Manager.
- Operate machinery to demonstrate equipment operation and analyze malfunctions.
- Supervise operators and maintenance workers in testing, tuning, and adjusting equipment to obtain optimum operating performance.
- Consult with engineering personnel to resolve uncommon problems in system operation and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot and adjust mechanical/electrical/controls equipment.
- Coordinate third party vendors and assist to resolve technical issues.
- Complete detailed Service Report for the services provided on a daily/weekly basis.
- Resolve customer issues through follow-up communication.
- Communicate with internal and external customers to understand needs and support resources and solutions accordingly.
- Facilitate warranty/non-warranty claims with the customer.
- Advise management on customer satisfaction and product performance; make suggestions for product improvements.
- Interpret specifications and drawings or sample parts, plan sequence of operations and machine to the specified dimensions and tolerances.
- Participates in development and implementation of tools, methods, and modules ensuring standards maintained.
- Works with other members of the Electrical Controls Engineering department and other teams to continuously improve methods and tools for Electrical Controls design, driving enhanced modularity, standardization, and functionality.
- Works with team members, customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems to provide the customer with a product or service compliant with their requirements.
- Travel to both domestic and international customer locations for long and short-term support.
- Follow customer’s plant and safety regulations while at their facility.
- Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in Electrical Controls Engineering design or equivalent.
- A minimum of 10 years of Electrical Controls Engineering experience.
- Journeyman license/certification is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
- Well versed in drafting principles.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and E-Plan.
- Capable of designing electrical controls for tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
- Well versed in the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.), pneumatics and hydraulics.
- Must be capable of giving and taking direction.
- Ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design issues.
- Ability to work effectively with both internal cross functional teams and customers according to deadlines.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, & Excel.
- Ability to read, speak, write, & understand English in a professional manner.
- Strong initiative, innovative, and keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal & communication skills; Experience working with customers to resolve problems.
- Willingness and ability to travel 25%.
- Must be eligible and able to travel domestically & internationally within 30 days from hire date and legally eligible to operate a vehicle, as this is an essential job function.
