Machine Builder - Mechanical

Overview

ATS Automation Global Services is seeking a bright, ambitious Mechanical Assembler who enjoys traveling, new experiences, and learning opportunities. This role is incredibly important, providing value added services to our customers through the delivery of technical support, installation, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment in the Transportation, Life Sciences, and Consumer Products industries. 

Under general direction, the successful candidate will machine, fit and assemble component parts and precision tooling with a quality and timely focus in order to build special-purpose machinery, robotic work cells and factory automation projects. When required, they may coordinate a portion of the activities, specified and approved by the manager, of a team of Toolmakers and apprentices involved in the mechanical build, coordination, bench assembly, floor assembly and integration of robotic work cells, mechanical assemblies and factory automation products in order to ensure that a quality product is built on time, safely, and to budget. 

The successful candidate will be able to set up and operate various machine tools, such as manual lathes and small mills, and apply knowledge of mechanisms, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures to support the assembly team with new work or rework. 

Responsibilities

  • Interpret drawings and other specifications to determine best practices, using knowledge of tool design and shop mathematics.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock to lay out for machining.
  • Prepare parts using hand tools, milling machines, lathes, grinders, and other toolroom equipment.
  • Verify dimensions and alignments, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Collect and assemble all necessary technical information and customer specifications to prepare for service scope.
  • Interpret specifications and drawings or samples parts; plan sequence of operations and machine to the specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Troubleshoot equipment at the customer’s facility; execute the necessary adjustments to bring equipment up to running status.
  • Report and correct abnormal equipment conditions and inaccurate actions by customer staff.
  • Review/suggest additional tools or equipment necessary to better operate or maintain customer equipment.
  • Consult with customers/supervisors/managers to plan layout of equipment during line moves.
  • When assigned as a project lead, lead on-site team and communicate with customer and ATS Project Manager.
  • Operate machinery to demonstrate equipment operation and analyze malfunctions.
  • Facilitate warranty/non-warranty claims with the customer.
  • Complete detailed Service Reports for the services provided on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Resolve customer issues through follow-up communication.
  • Advise management on customer satisfaction and product performance; make suggestions for product improvements.
  • Travel to both domestic and international customer locations for long and short-term support.
  • Follow ATS and customer's plant and safety regulations while at their facility.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and system controls.

Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in the proper use and selection of tools and equipment. 
  • Journeyman card/license/certification is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, reference manuals, and assembly system instruction guides. 
  • Well versed with troubleshooting of mechanical systems. 
  • Experience working with customers to resolve problems.  
  • Ability to make calculations in English and metric measurements. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, & Excel. 
  • Ability to read, speak, write, & understand English in a professional manner. 
  • Strong initiative, innovative, and keen attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environment.  
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills; Experience working with customers to resolve problems. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel 50% for machine installations and service work. 
  • Must be eligible and able to travel domestically & internationally within 30 days from hire date and legally eligible to operate a vehicle, as this is an essential job function.
