Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

As a member of a highly motivated, dynamic, multi-disciplined team, you will design and develop world-class aftermarket automation solutions. The Mechanical Designer is responsible for making design changes for retrofit projects, generating concept design, releasing drawings for production, providing input for quoting design work effort, and supporting the service team. 

Responsibilities

  • Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Select appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
  • Formalize and update drawing documentation.
  • Organize documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc. on assigned projects.
  • Review electrical requirements, with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
  • Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e., OSHA, CE or customer specific).
  • Liaise with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff.
  • Work with vendors for technical information and specifications.
  • Communicate all requested design changes to the project manager.
  • Create drawings of existing tooling using precision measuring devices such as verniers and micrometers.
  • Communicate time estimates and resource requirements to supervisor and project manager.
  • Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
  • Assist the fabricators, machinists, toolmakers and electricians in the debug, integration, resolving problems, and completion of systems.
  • Determine tools, fixtures, and equipment to be used in fabrication and assembly of mechanical components and complete assemblies.
  • Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment and problems involved in designing, changing, or re-arranging materials.
  • Periodically oversee co-op students on various projects.
  • Adhere to all ISO procedures pertaining to the job responsibilities.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.  
  • A minimum of 3 years of mechanical design experience.  
  • Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques. 
  • Well versed in drafting principles. 
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Solid Works. 
  • Capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts. 
  • Well versed in the use of electrical devices (i.e., switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.), pneumatics and hydraulics. 
  • Must be capable of giving and taking directions. 
  • Ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design issues. 
  • Ability to work effectively with both internal cross functional teams and customers according to deadlines. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, & Excel. 
  • Ability to read, speak, write, & understand English in a professional manner 
  • Strong initiative, innovative, and keen attention to detail 
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environment  
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills 
  • Experience working with customers to resolve problems   
  • Must be eligible and able to travel domestically & internationally within 30 days from hire date and legally eligible to operate a vehicle, as this is an essential job function
