Senior Applications Engineering

Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES:
•    Performs a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, primarily in support of design and development of factory automation systems.  Includes preparing and writing innovative detailed proposals for potential customers, working from general automation ideas and concepts.
•    Works with new and returning customers in collaboration with the ATS account/sales team, management and subject matter experts to develop custom solutions to meet our customers’ specific demands.
•    Typical activities include reviewing customer specifications and drawings, developing machine concept layout drawings including performing cycle time calculations, developing system cost estimates, writing detailed technical proposals and presenting to both internal management and external customers.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
•    Perform detailed review of available customer information, which could include specifications, drawings, procedures, sample parts, and similar production equipment to gain a full understanding of the customer’s needs.
•    Responsible for conceptual development, pricing and writing detailed technical proposals for all types of automation equipment and projects.
•    In projects where technical complexity is large, the applications engineer will involve key members of engineering management in pricing and conceptual layout.
•    Assists engineers and other technical staff in design and development of products, systems, processes and equipment by analyzing technical problems and working closely to customer specifications.
•    Involves third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process, where necessary.
•    Travels to the customer’s site to assist in project or product development, working with engineering design specifications, objectives and standards.
•    Provides sales presentations to customer personnel, when required.
•    Obtains and prepares detailed estimates of time, quantities, labor and material costs required for work areas such as; product design, testing, machine building, equipment installations and manufacturing processes.
•    Assembles and collects all necessary technical information and customer specifications from engineering and sales & marketing, in order to prepare detailed proposals.
•    Analyzes material and writes in clear, concise language for initial draft.  Then selects, organizes, edits and revises proposal.
•    Summarize and present ATS offerings and cost estimates to ATS management for approval.
•    Makes sure proposal is sent to customer by most efficient route to ensure it arrives on or before deadline date.
•    May be assigned special projects in support of engineering, sales & marketing.
•    Define scope of work adequately enough in proposal to allow project manager and project team to begin work on system.  Transfer information, ideas and details to the project manager and project team to begin project execution upon receipt of order and be available throughout project to support the project team.
•    Position involves extensive use of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
•    Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
•    Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
 

Additional Information

QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years’ experience in mechanical or electrical engineering support, preferably in an automation environment.  Must have a working knowledge of robotics, machine controls and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology.  In addition, must be familiar with the use of computerized word processing & computerized spreadsheets and AutoCAD or similar drawing package.  An ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear, concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential.

EDUCATION:
A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical, electrical or electro-mechanical design, engineering or equivalent.
