Group Lead - Mechanical Design

ATS is an industry-leading automation solutions provider to many of the world’s most successful companies.  The ATS Test Division specializes in developing custom in-process and End-of-Line Test Systems to meet and exceed the customer’s needs.  We are part of the Industrial Automation group with a strong focus on EV products including battery cell, module and pack leak and functional testing but also serve other industries including the Life Sciences group, Aerospace Industry, traditional automotive, specialty products and the growing Fuel Cell market.

ATS Test provides PC based solutions for complex test systems that need high accuracy, high data collection and advanced analysis.  Our core competencies include electrical functional testing, electro-mechanical testing, and pneumatic and hydraulic leak and flow testing.

Major Duties

 

  • Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of a group of mechanical designers.
  • Includes ensuring the quality and content of the deliverables generated by the group.   

Specific Responsibilities

 

  • Provides supervision, training, and guidance to designers and oversees task allocation in assigned group;
  • Participates in regular loading meetings with other Group Leads;
  • Accountable for the quality and on-time delivery of projects and tasks assigned to their group;
  • Develops plans to support proposal and project deliverables;
  • Responsible for group performance in respect to meeting departmental and project-based milestones and KPI's;
  • Enforces department procedural compliance and best practices; 
  • Works with other members of the Mechanical Engineering department to continuously improve department standards and procedures;
  • Develops tools and initiatives to increase team's efficiency; 
  • Participates in recruitment activities and onboarding of new hires; 
  • Manages employee reviews and performance goals & objectives;
  • Conducts 1:1 meetings with group members on regular basis to continuously develop and coach;
  • Responsible for Cost and Schedule oversight of all the projects assigned to the group;
  • Facilitates daily visual management meetings with their group;
  • Ensures, checks and approves that all work produced by his/her design group members is acceptable based on the functionality, adherence to standards, accuracy, completeness, and consideration for safety.  
  • Approves all material requisitions for projects assigned to his/her group. 
  • Maintains labour, material and schedule forecast information and any appropriate execution improvement plans provided to Program Management for programs assigned to his/her group. 
  • Reviews and evaluates new design related products to provide a cost effective, and up-to-date solution. 
  • Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct. 
  • Works in compliance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures. 
  • Ensures that all employees, under their direction, are aware of, and follow all Health and Safety procedures, established by ATS and assumes responsibility for their safety. 

Qualifications

 

Education:

 

  • A post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent qualification, specializing in mechanical design. 

 

Experience:

 

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design, development and qualification of factory automation projects.
  • Proven leadership qualities including; good oral and written communication skills, ability to lead and motivate group members, and a willingness to take responsibility for key aspects needed for job completion.
