Mechanical Designer

Major Duties
Intermediate Mechanical Designer plays a key role in creating and implementating mechanical test systems and components for our customers across industries.
In this role, you design and analyze mechanical systems, creating detailed CAD models and technical drawings, and ensuring your work meets required standards and safety protocols.
You collaborate with engineers, programmers, and fabricators to bring test systems from concept to full integration and commissioning. You’ll apply your technical expertise and problem-solving skills to tackle complex challenges—delivering reliable, precise systems in some of the most regulated and demanding environments.
Specific Responsibilities
- Perform engineering calculations for machine and tool designs, including strength, speed, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force.
 - Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, and hardness for equipment, processes, and products.
 - Assess the feasibility of using multiple machines for sequential operations.
 - Create working and detail drawings, and bills of materials using Solid Works and AutoCAD.
 - Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (e.g., OSHA, CE).
 - Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, and hardness.
 - Liaise with customers, in-house technical staff, and vendors for technical information and specifications.
 - Communicate design changes and task progress to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, and supervising designer.
 - Formalize and update drawing documentation.
 - Create drawings of existing tooling using precision measuring devices.
 - Supervise mechanical design efforts on a project level, delegating tasks to team members.
 - Organize project documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, and schedules.
 - Communicate time estimates and resource requirements for design tasks to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, and Project Manager.
 - Review electrical requirements with electrical designers and machine operations with programmers.
 - Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians in debugging, integration, and system completion.
 - Determine tools, fixtures, and equipment for fabrication and assembly of mechanical components.
 - Select and requisition appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies.
 - Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and test equipment.
 - Oversee co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
 - Adhere to ISO procedures and ensure compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
 - Follow health, safety, and environmental procedures, including reporting unsafe conditions and incidents.
 - Ensure the use of required protective equipment and attend all necessary training.
 
Qualifications
Education
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent.
 
Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience.
 
Skills
- Proficient in Solid Works and AutoCAD.
 - Strong knowledge of drafting principles.
 - Experience in designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
 - Understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and electrical devices.
 - Effective communication and teamwork skills.
 - Analytical skills for engineering calculations and design analysis.
 - Attention to detail for reviewing drawings and documentation.
 - Familiarity with ISO procedures and quality standards.
