Senior Systems Electrical Designer

The ATS Test Division specializes in developing custom in-process and End-of-Line Test Systems to meet and exceed the customer’s needs. We are part of the Industrial Automation group with a strong focus on EV products including battery cell, module and pack leak and functional testing but also serve other industries including the Life Sciences group, Aerospace Industry, traditional automotive, specialty products and the growing Fuel Cell market.
ATS Test provides PC based solutions for complex test systems that need high accuracy, high data collection and advanced analysis. Our core competencies include electrical functional testing, electro-mechanical testing, and pneumatic and hydraulic leak and flow testing.
Major Duties
Senior Systems Electrical Designer produces complete instrumentation solutions and electrical Test Systems designs based on customer specifications, and standardized design practices used at ATS Test. This role is responsible for successful completion of entire projects as part of an assigned project team.
Specific Responsibilities
- Works with applications engineers to help prepare concepts for test instrumentation.
- Collaborates with the software department, mechanical designers, suppliers, and customers during the design process to create a system that enables the machine to perform its intended function safely and reliably.
- Formulates and produces a complete electrical design package, which includes detailed schematics, I/O lists, panel layouts, bills of materials based on ATS Test Systems' standard specifications, and customer requirements.
- Specifies all electrical and controls-related hardware and software, and produces requisition forms for material purchases.
- Verifies that the electrical design package is complete, accurate, and safe, based on sound design practices and accepted standards, ensuring that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issuing to the shop floor.
- Integrates third-party equipment and instrumentation, including field I/O using industrial communication protocols, motion control products, transducers, and signal conditioners.
- Works with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and technicians on the shop floor to solve problems and provide the customer with a complete functional system. Responsible for the “Make it work” portion of projects, including instrument validation and machine capability studies.
- Member of the integration and commissioning team, assisting in final setup and operator training at the customer's facility.
- Works with other members of the electrical design department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating technology.
- Provides customers with training specific to their current project, including electrical hardware, machine operation, programming principles, program functionality, and program structure.
- Demonstrates complete competency in all ATS Test standard designs.
- Demonstrates complete competency in at least one specific skill (e.g., IP tester, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, solar tester), preferably with a solid understanding of all.
- Reviews drawing packages for design content, accuracy, and safety.
- Assists other designers and participates in tasks outside of his/her own workload.
- Schedules own projects and collaborates with project managers to ensure deadlines are met.
- Assists in selling the division to customers when on-site.
- Helps manage customer relationships to ease project manager involvement at a technical level.
- Works to enhance department methods and procedures, and is responsible for improving departmental methods, practices, and tools.
- Assists in actively finding and evaluating new technologies and methods related to our industry and products.
- Works toward the continual improvement goals of the department and the company. Assists in the development of department objectives to meet divisional goals, and helps establish and implement long-term strategic objectives for the department.
- Ensures all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS code of business conduct.
- Adheres to all health and safety rules and procedures.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- A Professional Engineer with a degree in electrical or electronic engineering and a minimum of 5 years of experience in designing electronic test equipment, or a post-secondary technology diploma or equivalent engineering qualification with a minimum of 10 years of related design experience, including at least 5 years in designing electronic test equipment.
- Complete knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical and the ability to keep abreast of leading-edge instrumentation technology is essential.
- Good verbal communication skills and able to deal with customers and other personnel.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
